WHERE WILL YOU FIND US?

Port Elizabeth, South Africa is situated in Algoa Bay which is a large eastward-facing half-heart bay. The city was established in the western sector of the Bay because of the protection offered by Cape Recife from the dominant south westerly swell.

There are two groups of islands within 10 km of the coast: the Bird Island group in the east and the Islands of the Cross, St Croix, Jaheel and Brenton islands in the centre.  All fall within marine reserves and are included in the scope of the Greater Addo National Park. These islands are home to 35 of the 91 recorded South African seabird species and six of our resident species breed here.

Almost half of the world’s population of the endangered African penguin live here and Bird Island is the home of the largest Cape gannetry in the world. With approximately 400 individuals remaining, the roseate tern, South Africa’s rarest and most endangered of South Africa’s seabirds, breeds on the islands.

OUR MISSION

SAMREC has launched a four-pronged attack.
RESCUE, REHABILITATE, RELEASE, EDUCATE

We aim

  • To form an effective stranding network along the coastline to respond to any strandings.

  • To rescue and rehabilitate animals in need of help and, so far as possible, return them to the wild.

  • To be prepared to respond to a major oil spill and rehabilitate any compromised marine life.

  • To provide research facilities and opportunities to scientists and veterinary specialists.

  • To create awareness for the need for coastal conservation.

  • To educate the people on how to care for our great asset and to save it for future generations.
