SAMREC SEASCHOOL
The SAMREC SEASCHOOL was formed to begin the
education of the general public and marine coastal users about the need
for such a centre and the dangers our marine life face.
Schools and organisations have already been visiting
the site for lessons on a variety of topics ranging from The Plight of
the Penguin ,through Insects of Cape Recife to The Struggles of Shipwreck
survivors. Through the exploration of the rock pools and coastal
environment and the use of a variety of equipment such as posters,
taxidermy specimens and dress-up clothing the children are able to have a
hands-on lesson.
Often it is not possible for the people to come to us
so our teachers have visited clubs, libraries, institutions and homes
for the aged.
Educators have also visited the rural areas, and
taken the sea and its creatures to children who have often never had the
opportunity to see them. They are encouraged to look at, taste , smell,
feel and to hear the sea through the use of specimens. Most importantly
they are taught about the dangers of pollution and the need for
conservation.
Programmes are continually being expanded to comply
with teachers requests and all talks can be adapted to the needs of the
audience, from the pre-schooler to the elderly.
Our teachers are volunteers from all walks of life
who share the passion of the environment.
OUR MOTTO WE CARE DEEPLY
RESEARCH
We will offer our facilities to any tertiary
institutions for their post graduate students. We hope to encourage
research on African penguins and the Cape fur seal among others.
It is planned that veterinary students will also use
the facilities to further their knowledge of the treatment of marine life.
VOLUNTEER PROGRAMME
The centre will be dependent on volunteers and we
plan to run ongoing training sessions covering all aspects of marine
animal rehabilitation. Our volunteers will thus be prepared to handle
daily incidents, as well as oil spill disasters.
The programme will also be of practical assistance to
tourism and education students.
The elderly will be invited to share their skills in
the administration and maintenance departments.
